Talking about being behind in technology, I lived in a town in Idaho where the county seat didn't electricity until 1961. In 1988 there were still some houses IN TOWN that didn't have indoor plumbing. And this was the largest town in the county.
Taking a cue from the signs you used to see on the highway when you crossed from one time zone into another I said we should have a sign outside of town saying, "You are now entering Challis Idaho. Please set your watch back 50 years."
Make all the jokes about the south being backward you want. Out west there are places where the jokes are true.
